Historical Photo Exhibition for ‘Vlach open days'
On August 23 and 24, CeRPHAAL, in collaboration with the Municipality of Permet, organized a photo exhibition titled ‘A journey in time with the Vlachs’. The exhibition featured historical photographs, mostly from the early 20th century, accompanied by information about the history, life, and tradition of the Vlachs in Albania.
The photos were arranged in thematic panels, showcasing various aspects of the Vlachs’ past ways of life, such as the itineraries of seasonal transhumant routes across the Upper Vjosa Valley, and the location and forms of their habitat organization in both seasonal and permanent settlements. A particular focus of the exhibition was the Vlach women and their significant and central role in the household economy, especially during the nomadic life cycle.
A series of photos also illustrated the historical presence of the Vlachs in the Permet region, highlighting their coexistence with local inhabitants and their contribution to the region’s culture and economy, not only as shepherds, but also as charcoal makers, caravan leaders of trade goods and passengers, forest and landscape guards, craftsmen, and merchants.
This exhibition is part of an initiative aimed at promoting and preserving aspects of Vlach culture, while also working to institutionalize the heritage of this minority group as part of the cultural heritage of the region.
